Current Situation in Education Sector in Ukraine

Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and independence for more than two months.

Every Ukrainian child is affected by the war. Because of air raid sirens and missile strikes all over Ukraine children live in continuing stress. The education process was completely stopped in February and resumed online in mid March in more or less safer regions.

About 3.8 million pupils have started distance learning in 12,000 schools in 16 regions.

In 8 regions, the education process is still partially suspended. 81,000 temporarily displaced children who were forced to leave their homes continue their education in other regions.

Final exams in schools were completely overhauled. It adds to the stressful situation of high school graduates. According to the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine about 23,000 Ukrainian teachers went abroad due to russia's military aggression.

People's lives are constantly in danger, the number of civilian deaths is growing, including children and the elderly people.

According to data provided by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office, for more than two months of war 647 children have become direct victims as a result of Russia’s armed aggression.  In particular, 227 children were killed and more than 420 were injured. These figures are not final, as work is underway in the areas of active hostilities, in the temporarily occupied and liberated territories. 

As a result of bombing and shelling of civilian infrastructure and residential areas by the Russian armed forces there were damaged 1,748 educational institutions, 144 are completely destroyed.

According to the United Nations, as of end of April the number of refugees fleeing from Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion was 5 million 34 thousand people.

More than 7.1 million people became internally displaced during the war.

2.8 million of them are children.

As a rule, people are fleeing from bloody atrocities with only one bag in their hands, and a little money with them. They need shelter, they need clothes, they need food, water, personal hygienic items, practically everything. Trade unions are doing their best to help these people. We are helping to organise shelters in schools, provide financial assistance to our members in need.

In April after Ukrainian army liberated areas around Kyiv, Chernigiv and Sumy, Ukrainians began returning to Ukraine.

During the last weeks, there has been an increase in the number of women and children crossing the border and coming back to Ukrainian territory. It is reported that more than 1.6 million people have already returned to the country. According to surveys, 90% of Ukrainians are planning to return, but it depends on the military situation.

Approximately 90% of our teachers who had to leave their homes and to flee to safer regions due to the russian attack are staying in Ukraine and continue to teach remotely.
