From April 12 to 18, 2026, an international trade union exchange took place in Frankfurt am Main and Mainz between the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine and the German Trade Union of Education (GEW).

Unions worldwide are supporting educators in Ukraine, as they struggle to organise, stand up for public education and defend workers’ rights. As the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth year, Education International’s development cooperation (DC) partners and union leaders continue to build solidarity.

The International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) 2026 took place on March 8-11, 2026, in Tallinn, Estonia. The event was attended by ministers of education and leaders of teachers’ unions from 20 countries around the world.

On December 17, 2025, the 10th Congress of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine was held in videoconference format. Headed by Trade Union President Georgiy Trukhanov and Deputy Presidents Liubov Harbarenko, Serhiy Romaniuk, Olha Chabaniuk, Serhiy Puhachov, and Dmytro Chomko, the congress was attended by delegates from regional organizations and invited guests. In total, the online event brought together over 120 participants.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) reports a sharp increase in civilian casualties caused by long-range missile and drone attacks.

The Ukrainian-American project “The Impact of Trauma and How It Affects Behavior and Learning: What Teachers Should Know”, jointly implemented by the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), has been successfully completed.

Last week, the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) held its regular meeting online, with over 40 representatives from different European countries participating.

The joint and strong response from Education International, the European Trade Union Committee for Education, and the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine, backed by 36 trade unions from around the world, showed the power of global solidarity.

Following every Russian attack on peaceful Ukrainian cities, the consequences remain tragically consistent: children killed, children wounded, and families destroyed. The suffering inflicted on Ukraine's youngest citizens is immeasurable and continues to deepen with each day of the war.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the draft State Budget for 2026. The security and defense sector remains the state's top priority for the coming year. At the same time, the document provides for a significant increase in funding for the education sector.
